Conclusion
As explored through this e-portfolio there are many explanations as to why the gap between genders in higher education subject choice is so large. Functionalism claims this is the normal order, each gender playing to their strengths. Feminism arguing that it is due to the gender stereotypes dictating what each gender should be doing. Marxism puts forward the notion that the hidden curriculum indoctrinates children to choose the subjects the ruling class think are best for society. Whilst social interactionism claims the gap is due to performing actions that will be perceived as masculine or feminine. Although this a normal part of society for functionalism, the conflict theories disagree, explaining how it is oppression and social control that lead to these 'choices'. Despite varying explanations, the data shows that most undergraduate courses are heavily gender unbalanced.
