Key theories
In this area, the case study will be discussed through a number of sociological perspectives both consensus and conflict, namely functionalism, feminism and Marxism. The sociological perspective was first theorised by Mills (1959) who wrote that the aim of sociology is to understand the relationships between individuals and their society. He argued that 'sociology should be used...to reveal how the context of society shapes our lives' (Andersen and Taylor, 2013, p5). From this many perspectives have been former using a range of social contexts as their basis. Whilst the feminist perspective uses the context of gender to research these relationships between state and user, Marxism focuses heavily on the context of social class. Arguments from various perspectives will be analysed in the following pages.
